Fixing Nasality for Speakers (Without Sounding Stuffed or Flat)
Let’s be blunt: most people who sound nasal aren’t dealing with sinus problems. They’re dealing with placement problems.
When resonance gets trapped high in the nose or squeezed behind the soft palate, you get that classic “pinched” tone that microphones amplify mercilessly.
Fix the placement, and the nasality disappears—instantly.
The Real Root of Nasality
Nasal tone comes from two physiological issues:
- Too much sound vibration in the nasal cavity
- Not enough space and lift in the mouth and throat
This creates a voice that sounds:
- flat
- tinny
- tight
- a little “whiny”
- and sometimes unintentionally childish
The good news? It’s fixable—and fast.
Why Nasality Shows Up More on Mic
Microphones exaggerate everything, especially frequencies around:
- 1k–3k (nasal brightness)
- 4k–6k (harshness)
If your placement is even slightly off, the mic exposes it.
Fixing Nasality: The 3-Point System
1. Open the Oral Space
Nasal voices usually have a small, tight mouth shape. Fix it by lifting the soft palate and widening the oral cavity.
Do this: Say the word “song” and exaggerate the “aw.” That’s the space you want.
2. Shift Resonance Forward—but Not Up
You want vibration in the lips and cheekbones, not the nose bridge.
Try: Hum “mmm” Then open into “mah.” Keep the buzz in the face—not the nose.
3. Lower Your Speaking Pitch
When you speak too high in your range, nasality spikes. Dropping 5–10% removes tension and gives your voice warmth.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forcing air (makes it worse)
- Blocking the nose with fingers (this creates distortion)
- Trying to “sound deeper” (usually adds throat tension)
- Speaking too fast (tightens resonance)
We’re fixing settings, not acting.
Try This 10-Second Nasality Reset
- Say “mmm” until it vibrates in the lips
- Drop your jaw and say “mah”
- Speak a sentence with that same space and buzz
Ninety percent of people hear the improvement immediately.
